Arise, 2017, powder-coated steel, LED light, 100" high x 38" diameter

This beautiful contemporary sculpture, Arise, symbolizes the new growth and energy of the Biltmore Center; transitioning from the old to the new. The gently tapered shape signifies movement upward and outward, similar to a blossoming flower. The vertical, column-like form is designed to be elegant and timeless, with vertical layers composed in a circular array to create a dynamic flow. The sculpture illuminates at night from within a center spine as light passes through each steel panel, creating a dramatic gradient effect.

TRANSFORMER, 2015, steel/nickel-plating, rust oxide, 74 x 31 x 16"

This sculpture commission was completed and installed in July, 2015. It was truly a labor of love to create.

The client was an amazing and strong woman whose only child, a beautiful 23 year-old girl, was tragically killed in a horrible car accident. She wanted to memorialize her daughter, not with a literal, sentimental statue, but rather with an interpretive sculpture that captured the essence of her spirit.

I created a symbolic work that embodies a feeling of rebirth and transformation.  Based on the archetype of mother and child, I fabricated two outer, layered, feminine forms. In the center is a third form which appears as if it is rising upward, evoking the notion of transcendence, implying that her spirit goes on.

Being the artist chosen to remember her daughter, was a profound and humble honor.

NOTE: Photos above were taken prior to the implementation of a new surrounding landscape plan.

NEW SCULPTURE

UNIFIED FIELD

The work is visually inspired by the ordered patterns of the earth’s magnetic fields, as they move in a continuous flowing loop through the north and south pole.

The title is also a reference to the Unified field theory  in particle physics - "an attempt to describe all fundamental forces and the relationships between elementary particles in terms of a single theoretical framework." -Encyclopedia Britannica

This concept also serves as metaphor for something more personal; the deep interconnection between us all, and that each of us plays a role in the collective, human chain.

The sculpture is fabricated from square steel tube and has a two-part 'black chrome' industrial powder-coat finish. Dimensions are 32" tall x 36" diameter.
