Objective The client desired a beautiful sculpture, not only to enhance their backyard area, but more importantly, embody a personal struggle. Sadly, they lost their house to a devastating fire and then, a year later, built it anew. As such, they wanted a symbol which evoked this transformative process.
Approach Conceive of a sculptural idea that exemplifies the mythical essence of transformation by fire: ‘the phoenix rising from the ashes.’ When the client was asked what type of feeling she wanted the sculpture to convey, she raised her arms in a representation of stretching upwards towards the sky.
Solution Creation of a symbolic, free-standing metal sculpture, called Rising. Each element of the sculpture expresses an aspect of this concept: the base invokes a 'pyre'; the mid-section of radial lines suggest outstretched 'wings' or 'fire'; while the upper oval shape references an ‘egg’ or ‘head’ symbol. Impact Sculpture provides the client with an inspirational daily visual, symbolizing this memorable experience in their lives and their capacity to transcend adversity.
Testimonial from Client:
"The 2007 fire that destroyed the home where we raised our children was devastating. Brad understood our loss and created a powerful symbol of rebirth. It has done wonders for our mental health. Seeing the sculpture each day as we awaken helps us rejoice in the knowledge that all that is best in our lives could not be destroyed."
DESIGN PROCESS / from conception to installation
This sequence of images show the process of visualizing, designing, and fabricating the sculpture described above. Beginning with concept renderings (using Rhino 3-d modeling software), moving into the 'messy' nature of fabricating each of the three sculptural elements, then into the rust finish, and finally, the completed work.
